For the last couple of years, CSNY 1974 was starting to seem like the Chinese Democracy of archival live albums. David Crosby and Graham Nash kept claiming they were months away from releasing a box set from CSNY's infamously debauched 1974 reunion tour, but the project never seemed to materialize.

The war in Iraq is the backdrop as the CSNY "Freedom of Speech Tour" crisscrosses North America. The film examine's the band's connection to its audience in both political and musical terms, and examines the relationship between Vietnam-era anti-war sentiment and today's post-9/11 environment. A Vietnam veteran sums it all up: "It's deja vu all over…

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young know all about it. That was the situation in the late '60s and the early '70s, when the well-pedigreed quartet reigned as one of rock's most celebrated supergroups. Sadly, it's also the situation now, which has led CSNY to re-embrace its role as creators of thoughtful and passionate protest music on its Freedom of Speech…

There isn't a candidate, political group, or grass-roots cause attached to the current Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young tour -- a reminder that once upon a time protest music didn't require an organizing principle. Songs like ``For What It's Worth" and ``Ohio" were mainstream radio fare. Topical tunes weren't career-threatening novelties.

With pipe organ vocal harmonies and the shrill of an electric guitar, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Sunday night underscored the timelessness of peace and protest.
Perhaps the most famous set of consonants in popular culture, CSNY Sunday night performed at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Sullivan County. The multi-million dollar amphitheater…

A giant peace symbol often served as a backdrop Sunday night, but it didn't always look peaceful. When Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young began a run of the first four songs from Neil Young's bitter new "Living With War" album, the symbol reappeared on the rear curtain -- now battered and crooked, like it had been through the fight of its life.

As a rule, newspaper scribes – even opinionated writers like me – are supposed to leave their politics at home, or at the very least leave them out of their stories.
Critics at Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly can get away with poking fun at the president or flat-out condemning his policies without much repercussion – and truth be told, I have…

There's no denying it, there's no hiding it: Neil Young is mad as hell. It has been almost 40 years since Woodstock and America seems more lost than ever. No more big marches, no big protests, nowadays things are different. Americans don't burn flags, they blog.
For Neil Young, it's not enough. It's not the way of the '60s. So rather than sitting…

If not for the creative spark that inspired Neil Young to write and record his new album, Living With War, his summer tour with David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash would have been simply a welcome gathering of old friends.
But with Young's scathing indictment of the war in Iraq as the band's muse, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young found renewed…

This, I guess, is what makes great art and great music: timelessness. Or maybe it's more of a comment on the foibles of humans and their history.
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young played songs written three decades ago and songs written three months ago. At times you couldn't tell the difference.
The oldies resonated with the crowd in a whole new way.…

They say you grow more conservative as you get older. If that is so, no one bothered to tell David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young. Almost 37 years after the iconic quartet made its debut at the Woodstock Music & Arts Festival, its members continue to sing out passionately against war and those who wage it.
